On October 21, 2026, Electronic Arts shut down BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, and canceled the next Mass Effect game CONFIRMED. It came eleven weeks after a $55 billion buyout led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund closed, so we followed the money to separate what's known from what's only suspected.
EA shuts down BioWare
The closure was part of a wider round of cuts across EA, reported at around 400 jobs REPORTED. In a letter to staff on October 21, EA's leadership said it would keep investing in EA Sports, Battlefield and Apex Legends, plus two licensed action games: the next Star Wars Jedi and Marvel's Iron Man CONFIRMED.
“But EA says it is continuing to invest in EA Sports, Battlefield, Apex Legends, the next Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man.”Read it at newsweek.com →
“Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare and reports about it axing around 400 jobs across the entire company”Read it at nintendolife.com →
That list matters for one reason: it still includes single-player games. Whatever EA's plan is, it isn't "no more story games". BioWare's just weren't on it.
Mass Effect began as an Xbox exclusive
Rewind to 2007. The first Mass Effect launched that November as an Xbox 360 exclusive, published by Microsoft CONFIRMED. A month earlier, EA had agreed to buy BioWare, together with Pandemic Studios, in a deal worth $860 million CONFIRMED. Because BioWare owned the series, Mass Effect went to EA with it, and later games came to PC and PlayStation as well CONFIRMED.

BioWare's misses: Andromeda, Anthem and Veilguard
For a while, the deal worked. Then the misses started. Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017 and Anthem in 2019 both fell short CONFIRMED. In January 2025, EA said Dragon Age: The Veilguard had come in nearly 50% below the company's expectations CONFIRMED, after a development that, according to Bloomberg, swung toward live service and back REPORTED.
By mid-2025, Bloomberg reported that only a few dozen people were still working on the next Mass Effect REPORTED. In other words, BioWare's troubles began years before the buyout was announced in September 2025.
“A small team—a few dozen employees, according to the Bloomberg report—is still at work on the next Mass Effect game”Read it at pcgamer.com →
EA's $55 billion buyout
Now, the money. In the Financial Times' account, Jared Kushner worked with the private equity firm Silver Lake on a plan to take EA private, and his Saudi connections helped bring Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on board REPORTED.
Who is Jared Kushner? He is Donald Trump's son-in-law and was a senior adviser during Trump's first term, when he led the White House's Middle East peace push and grew close to the crown prince CONFIRMED. After leaving the White House, he founded the investment firm Affinity Partners in 2021 CONFIRMED. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is its largest investor, with $2 billion CONFIRMED, and PIF's own officials reportedly objected before the crown prince overruled them REPORTED.
On September 29, 2025, PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners announced the deal: $55 billion, the largest leveraged buyout in history CONFIRMED. Somewhere between $18 billion and $20 billion of it was financed with debt REPORTED.
The deal closed on August 4, 2026 CONFIRMED. According to a Brazilian regulatory filing made before the close, PIF would own 93.4% of EA, Silver Lake 5.5% and Affinity Partners 1.1% REPORTED.

Why Saudi Arabia wants video games
Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan is about building an economy that relies less on oil CONFIRMED. Gaming is one of its most visible pieces: a national gaming and esports strategy aims to make the country a global center for the industry by 2030 CONFIRMED, and PIF owns Savvy Games Group, a Riyadh-based games and esports company CONFIRMED.
The Esports World Cup, run by Saudi Arabia's Esports Foundation, was held in Riyadh in 2024 and 2025 CONFIRMED. For 2026, the Foundation relocated it to Paris because of the conflict in the Middle East CONFIRMED. That edition still had a $75 million prize pool and two EA games in its lineup: Apex Legends and EA Sports FC 26 CONFIRMED.

EA's debt, the cost cuts and the Star Wars report
Debt has to be paid back. Reports put EA's interest bill at about $1.8 billion a year REPORTED, and Bloomberg reported that EA was looking to save around $700 million a year in costs REPORTED.
“EA will take on $18 billion in debt, putting it on the hook to pay $1.8 billion/year in interest.”Read it at wccftech.com →
That doesn't mean EA can't pay its debts. It does explain why Bloomberg warned, when the deal closed, that layoffs were likely REPORTED. Eleven weeks after the deal closed, EA shut BioWare CONFIRMED.
On October 30, 2026, Bloomberg reported that EA had weighed the next Mass Effect against a new Star Wars: Battlefront game and dropped Mass Effect, with the buyout's debt adding financial pressure on that choice REPORTED. Asked about the closure, an EA spokesperson said the company reached its decision after "months of planning, review, and analysis, including careful consideration of evolving business conditions" CONFIRMED. EA itself has never said the debt or its new owners caused the closure, and no report we found says the owners made the call, so any link beyond Bloomberg's account is our theory, not a fact SPECULATION.
“The Bloomberg report specifically cites financial pressure coming from the leveraged buy-out of Electronic Arts, which saddled the company with $18 billion in debt”Read it at gamedeveloper.com →
“collectively reached this decision following months of planning, review, and analysis, including careful consideration of evolving business conditions, industry dynamics, and our long-term priorities”Read it at windowscentral.com →
Fans want Xbox to bring Mass Effect home
Mass Effect started on Xbox, and after the closure, fans started asking Microsoft to buy the series back CONFIRMED. A Save Mass Effect petition passed 170,000 signatures by October 25, and fans planned a billboard outside EA's headquarters REPORTED.
One fan, posting under #SaveMassEffect, put it this way:
Pain. The timing is just bad. Would be a dream to see it come home to XBOX and be a pillar franchise like it should have been. #SaveMassEffect
Guy Welch, who says Mass Effect was his first assignment at Xbox, looked back on the launch the night the closure was announced (his full post continues on X):
Mass Effect was my first assignment at Xbox. It was a first-party game and an Xbox exclusive. I'd arrived near the end of a very long development cycle. My job was to make sure it landed well with retailers, critics, and fans. And it really did. The relationship was over
As of early November 2026, Microsoft had shown no public interest. Windows Central's sources suggest Microsoft isn't going to bid for BioWare or Mass Effect REPORTED.
