PlayStation Crashes to Dead Last as Fans Slam Sony's Digital-Only Plan

PlayStation went from first place to dead last on the Console Wars board on November 5. Its Console Vibe Score fell from 78.6 to 6.0, a 72.6-point crash between our 08:57 and 12:00 UTC snapshots, while the PlayStation conversation on X was led by one complaint: you don't really own the games you buy.

Console Vibe Score, 0–100: fan mood on X, evidence-adjusted. How it works

The Vibe Score tracks fan mood on X, not sales. In this snapshot, PlayStation's X conversation scored 100% negative. The biggest topic was digital ownership, followed by talk about PS5 sales and skepticism about Sony's Black Friday discounts. Nintendo, third in the 08:57 UTC snapshot, took the top spot.

CHOICE gives Sony a 2026 Shonky Award

On November 4, Australian consumer group CHOICE named Sony Interactive Entertainment one of its 2026 Shonky Award winners. The Shonkys are CHOICE's yearly call-out of products and services it says took advantage of Australians. Sony's award was "for asking us to pay to play, but not own": a jab at the fact that digital games are licensed to players rather than sold to them.

Gaming sites picked it up the same day. TheGamer put it bluntly in its headline.

No more discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028

The award landed on an older sore spot. In July, Sony announced that disc production for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. After that, new games will be sold in digital formats only, both on PlayStation Store and at retailers.

For players who like to resell, lend or simply keep their games, that's the part that stings. The Shonky put a fresh spotlight on it: CHOICE's own write-up ties the award directly to the end of discs.

What PlayStation fans are saying

One post in our snapshot tied it all together: the award, Sony's licence terms and the end of discs.

The rest of the PlayStation conversation followed the same lines: the licensed-not-sold model, complaints about PS5 sales, and Black Friday discounts that a Windows Report post on X compared unfavorably with PC and Steam prices. You can follow how that conversation moves on the PlayStation topic page.

The rest of the board

Nintendo jumped 42.9 points to #1 (50.1 → 93.0) on Zelda launch day. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake came out on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, and Nintendo's X conversation was entirely positive.

Xbox climbed 21.3 points (67.7 → 89.0) and held #2. Its conversation centered on new releases and the November Game Pass wave, including the 1.0 release of VOID/BREAKER on November 4 and Warhammer Survivors on November 10 (Pure Xbox).

Steam dropped 38.0 points (45.1 → 7.1). Developers on X say AI-made games are clogging Steam's review queue and delaying real launches. One indie publisher blamed that backlog for derailing its game's release. Valve hasn't confirmed that AI submissions caused the delays, so treat this as developers' account.

What we couldn't verify

  • That the award or the digital-only plan caused the fall. They're what PlayStation fans were talking about while the score dropped. The Vibe Score measures mood, not causes.
  • Fan claims about Sony's sales and management. Several came up in the snapshot, but we couldn't confirm them with a solid source, so they're not in this story.
  • That AI games caused Steam's review delays. That's what developers say. Valve hasn't said so.

What's next for PlayStation on the board

PlayStation has bounced back from bad days on this board before, and the score refreshes twice a day. Vote for who won today's console war on the Console Wars dashboard and check back after the next snapshot to see who's dead last next.

How we score this. The Console Vibe Score tracks fan mood about PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Steam on X, refreshed twice a day and adjusted for how well each claim is backed up. It measures the conversation, not sales. Read the methodology or see the full snapshot behind this story.
